Originally from Venezuela, these jewel-toned fruits are increasing in popularity, and for a good reason. Compared to a standard navel orange, they have a dark pink flesh, due to the antioxidant lycopene, making its inside resemble more of a grapefruit. Beyond their eye appeal, this citrus has less pith and are seedless. When thinking of taste, Cara Caras are less acidic than a normal orange, giving them a sweeter flavor that can been described as a berry-like.
If their sweet flavor and easy to eat packaging isn’t enough for you to try them, this fruit packs a nutritious punch. With the lycopene, 150% of your recommended daily value of Vitamin C and 30% of Vitamin A, this fruit is a powerhouse of antioxidants. In a medium Cara Cara you will get about 7 grams of Fiber helping your heart and digestion. They are a good source of Potassium, a nutrient we all could use more of for our hydration, muscles and heart health. Any way you slice your Cara Cara, you will be doing something good for your body by biting into one.
Speaking of slicing, this citrus is good enough to enjoy on its own, but one of my favorite ways to enjoy it is segmented over an arugula salad with feta cheese, walnuts and a simple dressing.
Some other ways to enjoy your Cara Cara:
· Mixed into smoothies
· Baked into pound cake
· Dipped in chocolate
· Cooked with Seafood
· Segmented onto toast
· Mixed up in a Margarita or your favorite cocktail
Next time you’re at the store, reach for the Cara Cara’s and try out some new recipes before they’re out of season.
